Birth doulas have an extraordinary role in childbirth. They are specifically hired by the mother/birthing couple as a special advocate for her and the baby during the birthing process. A doula is an invaluable part of the birth team in any setting—hospital, home, or birth center. She promotes positive communication among all members of the birthing team, including the midwife, doctor, and nurses. Our birth doulas will:
•Meet with you and your labor partner to become acquainted prior to childbirth
•Explore your birth plan priorities and do our best to dispel any fears or concerns
•Welcome the opportunity to meet with your physician or midwife at a regularly scheduled prenatal visit
The support of a caring and nurturing birth doula has been proven to considerably shorten labor, decrease the need for pain medications, lower the incidence of a cesarean, and increase breastfeeding and parental bonding success. Some expectant fathers are concerned that hiring a labor assistant undermines his job as a coach. This is a common misconception. In fact, a birth doula can assist an expectant father with knowing how to best support his partner in the birthing process. The loyalty, emotional support, and information that a birth doula gives can be quite comforting at such an important time. Our birth doulas are well trained and capable of assisting by using a variety of techniques that are sure to enhance an already awesome experience!
Postpartum Doulas
Postpartum doulas have an immeasurable role in the initial weeks following childbirth. Our doulas support the mother in her new role and guide the parent(s) in newborn care. They also prepare meals, run errands, and perform light housekeeping. Yet, our primary roles are to share the importance of rest, which is necessary for a healthy recovery, and to provide information regarding the care of the baby. There are so many special moments that come in the first weeks after childbirth. Allowing a postpartum doula to assist can ensure that you are able to focus on creating beautiful memories with your family that are healthy and joyous!
NOW’s birth and postpartum doula services provide a complete emotional support system along with meeting the physical needs of the mother. Research shows that mothers who have a good support system:
• Have less postpartum depression
• Have greater success with breastfeeding
• Have greater self-confidence
• Feel more secure and cared for
• Have lower incidence of abuse
